The Asylum has acquired a brand new ShopBot PRSAlpha CNC Gantry router with a 96" x 48" table. The z-axis range is 6".

Step-by-Step

  • Take the training class
  • Review the tool rubric
  • Take the ShopBot tool test
  • Design a part
  • Select and acquire a router bit
  • Generate CAM files using VCarve, HSMWorks, or other tools
    • VCarve Pro ShopBot Edition is available in the Asylum computer lab
    • HSMWorks requires an updated post-processor for use with the ShopBot. The files are here
  • Create a reservation system account here (if you don't have one already)
  • Schedule time using the reservation system here
  • Operate the machine, following the checklist
  • Troubleshooting: see info at the bottom of this page

Costs

Note the time for the cutting; cost for cutting is $5 per use, with $20/hour of spindle time, rounding up to 5 minute time intervals ($1.67/every 5 minutes). So, if you cut a part that takes 4 minutes to cut, that's $5 + $1.67 = $6.67. If you cut 5 such parts, the total cost is $5 + 20 minutes of spindle time, or $5 + $6.67 = $11.67.

Troubleshooting

Default Settings

To reload the default settings:

  • Reboot the computer and make sure you are logged on as admin.
  • Launch the ShopBot control software, SB3.exe
  • If you are in easy mode, click the [?] button, then click "Switch to Full Mode"
  • Go to menu Utilities->Reset Defaults. This will open a file dialog to the default settings directory. Load the file there called AsylumShopBotPRSalpha9648.sbd
  • After reloading the defaults you must home the x,y using the proximity switches, since the defaults file doesn't know where the spindle is. Do this using menu item Cuts -> C3.


Changing Move/Jog Speeds

For future reference if the axes are moving slowly it means the x,y or z jog and/or move speeds have been set abnormally low. This can happen if there is an error during one of the zeroing routines. You can just reload the defaults to fix this. There is also a menu action to change them. Reasonable values are:

  x,y:  move speed: 4ips, jog speed: 12ips
  z: move speed: 1ips, jog speed: 4ips

You can change these via the menu items Move -> move Speeds and Jog -> jog Speeds.


Firmware/Software Updates

If you think a firmware or software update is needed please contact the shopbot-operators@artisansasylum.com mailing list. New versions need to be tested first, and require a programmer to update customization code we've written for our operating environment.
