Thanks to a random set of events, we have a VM40 Seiki CNC Mill that will be rigged into the machine shop next Wednesday the April 8th.

On April 9th, I would like to invite folks who would like to be involved with the power up of this machine.

We will have some time to go over the machine and evaluate what needs to be done.

• The machine was last run in “5-10 years ago” which means, we don’t know how long it has been sitting. • It has a hydraulic tool changer so that will be an adventure. • It has two data inputs, tape and some wired serial protocol. This will need to be hacked. • It was sold in 1987 • It has a servo amplifier that will likely need some love on it’s 15.4 v power supply. • It’s pendant will need to be rewired, the connection is failing.

Best case scenario,

• Change fluids • Lubricate everything • Clean her up • we plug her in, and she works. • We will then need to create a workflow to get data from computers into the machine. • Document everything and put it into the wiki and get folks trained on the machine.

This should be a last resort, and should not be necessary under normal circumstances!

Procedure for removing axis servo-motor encoders (taken from my e-mail to machine-shop-monitors on 5/4/2015):

1) Disconnect the signal cable. It's the largish right-angle connector with the wire coming out of it. It has a screw-down ring to hold it in place. I had to use some channel locks to get it started moving.

2) Right next to the signal connector, there is a 10mm hex screw. Remove this screw completely. It's just a hole plugger; the hole allows you to access the set screw that couples the encoder to the motor shaft. If you cannot reach this screw (like on the X axis, because it's pointed down at the bed), perform steps 4 and 5 next. Then gently rotate the housing without pulling it off until you can reach the screw. Replace the screws removed in step 5, then remove the 10mm hex screw.

3) Loosen the coupler set screw. Inside the hole you'll see the coupler. There is a 2.5mm hex set screw. You may have to manually rotate the ball screw to get the set screw facing the right way.

4) Take the end cap off the encoder. There are three 4mm hex screws that hold the cap onto the end. Remove them, and then remove the cap.

5) Loosen the encoder. Inside you'll see the encoder housing (black plastic with wires). There are four more 4mm hex screws. Remove these. The whole orange end should now come off. (It might be sticky with age, so be careful.)

6) Remove the encoder housing. On the side with the encoder shaft (that couples to the motor shaft) there are four more hex screws. I believe these are 3mm hex (slightly larger than the coupler set screw). Pull the black plastic part away carefully. There are three Phillips head screws that hold the plastic on. Remove those and carefully pull the housing aside.

7) Loosen the circuit board. There are four more Phillips screws that hold the circuit board down. Remove those and carefully move the board aside. You're now looking at the glass scale of the encoder.

8) The glass scale can be cleaned with a lint-free cloth (microfiber works well) and denatured alcohol. Make sure all the alcohol has evaporated before re-assembling the encoder.

Reverse the procedure to re-assemble.
