In an arc welder, a strong electric current is passed between an electrode and the workpiece.  A conductive plasma forms in the gap between the two electrodes, reaching a temperature around 15,000 Kelvin (~25,000 F)

In a TIG welder the electrode is a rod of tungsten (element 74) very often alloyed with thorium (element 90.)  This material resists extremely high temperatures.  To prevent the electrode and the workpiece from burning, they are protected by a shield of argon, which is an inert gas.

In a TIG welder the electrode is contained in a torch with gas supply that is held by hand. Filler metal (if needed) is added as a rod with the other hand.  The metal shop supplies a variety of welding rods: Mild steel in sizes ranging from 1/32" up to 1/8"; aluminum, and bronze or brass for brazing.  Other materials such as titanium rod must be supplied by the user.
 
The plasma in the arc is an intense source of light, including ultraviolet radiation.  The user must wear specialized protective gear to avoid eye damage and radiation burns.

Class Description
