For members who don't know me, I am Bill Zimmer, a long time Asylum member, past member of the board and current member of the steering committee. I came to the Artisan's Asylum because of all the great projects and the people who were doing them. The Asylum is a unique place with unique people and I want to do my part to keep it alive for a long time. The Asylum is an important part of my life.
My background includes running a business unit at Digital Equipment Corporation, then a program manager in business process reengineering in the turnaround effort at the same company. Later I was Chief Information Officer at AS&E, a public company. I currently make antique reproduction furniture and my day job is creating assistive technology for people who are blind. I want to use my business background to create financial stability so we can go on making unique projects for a long time to come.
Over the years I have worked with many of our Executive Directors to make sure they knew our membership, who we are, what we have done, what we are doing now. The Asylum was built by members and members have made it the great place it is today. We have grown to a place where we need professional management. We can only reach our potential by members, staff and the board working together.
Our finances leave us with very little margin for error. Missing a grant that we were counting on, an unexpected major expense or a liability not covered by insurance could spell disaster. We have come close in the past. If elected, I will work to move the Asylum from having just enough funding to survive to a model that allows us to grow in ways that we could only imagine.
My goal will be to do my part in creating an environment where empowered members, staff and the board can work transparently and together to achieve our potential.
