Hours 24/7 EXCEPT from 8:00 pm - 10:15 pm on Saturdays between April and November

Hours

The bicycle shop is available to Asylum members any time except when SCUL is preparing for group rides ("missions") from April through November. Those hours are typically 8:00 pm until 10:15 pm on Saturdays.

Basenite

SCUL has an informal time for weekly bicycle-hack-sessions called Basenite on Tuesday evenings from approximately 7 pm until whenever. Asylum members are welcome to stop in! This event is not formally hosted by any one SCUL pilot, and it's less likely to have strong participation during the winter months when bicycling is more difficult. However, it's when you're most likely to see bicycle enthusiasts in the shop.

Training

The prerequisite for using anything in the bike shop, including tools and stands, is attending a free introductory training. Sign up for a training slot here. If you can't find a time that works for you, e-mail the shop lead.

Available tools

The only facilities in this shop that are shared with Artisan's members are the bicycle specific tools and infrastructure. The soldering station, computer workstation, power tools, bicycle parts, and bicycles are not shared equipment and are only available to SCUL members. Available tool boards and toolboxes are labeled "Shared". Highlights include:

  • Several bike stands
  • Bench vises
  • Solvents, cleaners, lubricants (consider making a small monetary donation if using any of these)
  • Rags
  • Safety glasses and ear protectors
  • Bicycle-construction specific tools
    • Pipe vise
    • Knurlers, guides, frame alignment gauge, blocks, hacksaws, files, a tubing notcher, bottom bracket reamer, etc.
    • Wheelbuilding tools, including a truing stand, spoke wrenches, spoke threader, nipple driver and a dishing gauge
    • SCUL-built fork jigs and other special purpose tools
  • Bicycle-maintenance specific tools
    • Headset tools, including a headset press
    • Bottom bracket and cassette removal tools
    • Crank removal tools
    • Cone and pedal wrenches
    • Metric and standard spanners
    • 3rd/4th hand, chain gauges, chain tools, chainring spanners, axle vises, chain whips, cable cutters, etc.
    • Pumps, tire levers, pressure gauges
  • Hand tools
    • Screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, scissors, chisels, sledge hammers, wire cutters, snips
    • Hex (allen) wrenches, all sizes
    • Paint brushes, rulers, vise grips, awls, channel locks, levels

Unavailable equipment

None of the remaining equipment in the bike shop is available to Asylum members; higher quality tools are available in other craft areas in the Asylum. For example, drill presses, electronics tools, sewing tools, screenprinting tools and printers, and computers are not available.

Please do not ride any bicycles (ships) unless being guided and invited to do so by a SCUL pilot.

What if I break something or use something up?

It happens. SCUL just needs to know about it so that it can be repaired or replaced.

  1. Take one of the yellow damage tags from the rack on the left as you enter the shop.
  2. Fill out the tag as descriptively as possible:
    1. Good: "The bicycle pump clamp is damaged and doesn't stay seated on the valve."
    2. Not so good: "This doesn't work!"
    3. Or, if something's used up: "We're out of steering dampener fluid!"
  3. Attach the tag to the damaged item or the empty container using a bent bicycle spoke (hanging from either tool board) or a rubber band cut from inner tube (in the cubbyhole labeled "rubber band stock" in the green cabinet).
  4. For extra credit, notify the shop lead.

Parts

Metal stock, parts in parts bins and drawers, inner tubes/other repair parts, and any and all other parts are not available to Asylum members. Please do not help yourself to any parts or other consumable hardware.

Bicycle Cruft

There's a bicycle cruft shelf located in the aisle, just outside the bike shop proper. This is the best place for you to leave parts and bicycle related equipment that you'd like to share with Artisan's members. If the shelf is full, move the worst looking cruft into the trash or metal scrap recycling (by the entrance to the metal shop) to make room for your crufty contribution.

Donations

"Yo dawg, I heard you like trash, so here's some trash to go with your trash..." --Xzibit meme

Here are some guidelines for handling donations to SCUL. People are generous with things they're going to throw out anyway, however, it takes time and energy to put things away, find storage space, or strip frames and take the garbage out. The value of the donation needs to outweight the cost in time and energy to SCUL.

What we accept

  • Earth money (make sure to hand it to the shop lead if it's a large amount; checks can be made out to 'SCUL')
  • All usable bicycles
    • Curvy old steel bicycles and frames in usable condition (i.e. not bent or rusted out) for chopping
    • Whole donated bicycles, even if they are aluminum -- if it's not something we'll chop, but it's got resale value of $100 or more, we will repair it and sell it on Craig's List
  • Items that are used up frequently, like inner tubes, tri-flow, rags, fasteners, abrasives, beer molecules
  • Items that are used infrequently but are in short supply (check stock levels before accepting)
  • High-quality bike parts (if you don't know if it's high quality, ask someone to assess it for accepting it)
  • Tools that significantly expand the shop's capabilities (check with the shop lead if it takes up a lot of space first, otherwise consider donating it to the Asylum)
  • Raw materials for specific, active projects (i.e. plywood if we're building wood shelving)

What we don't accept

  • Items not explicitly described on the list above
  • Low-quality, not easily repairable department-store bikes e.g. Huffy, Murray, AMF, Sears
  • Bikes that are just frames.
    • See above for BikeSnotBombs criteria.
  • Rusted out or damaged steel bike frames
  • Crappy bike parts
  • Babies

How to handle a donation

  • If it's earth money, hand it to the shop lead.
  • Find a SCUL pilot and ask them to handle the donation by tagging it with a donation tag or putting it away.

Please do not leave donated items in the shop without checking with the shop lead or a SCUL pilot first.
