<b>PLEASE SIGN IN WHEN YOU ENTER THE SHOP!</b>
 
Please note: a tool test is not a lesson AND we are not here to trick you! We simply want to be sure that you are operating the machines safely, cleaning up after yourself and that you know what to do if something doesn’t go as planned while you are working.
 
All Shop users will be tool tested on “Work Surfaces” and “Ironing Station” regardless of which machines (domestic or industrial) that you are working on –Thank you!
 
<b>Work Surfaces </b>
*Big White Table (closer to the door) is for fabric/pattern paper ONLY, no hot tools allowed! No drinks/food/bags are allowed on this table–no exceptions!
*Big Dark Grey Table (closer to ironing station) all purpose work. Please protect the table with scrap paper or cardboard if you are using glue/paint or anything that could leave a stain behind. If your project requires cutting, use a green self-healing cutting mat
*Work Stations (under the white boards) - 4 stations are open for any craft–sewing machines should be returned to the grey shelves after use
*Please keep beverages covered and enjoy your snacks/food in the Holton Kitchen
*Please re-stack chairs/bins/carts and keep aisles clear for other members!
 
<b>Ironing Station</b>
*Please leave the iron plugged into the automatic shut off timer, set the timer to your desired time (do not use the “on/off” button on the timer)
*Utilize the “on/off” switch on the big iron
*Always refill the Iron after you are finished working
*Additional irons are stored in the cubbies below the ironing table
*Additional ironing boards are stored behind the ironing table
 
<b>Domestic Sewing Machines </b>
*Select your desired machine from the shelf storage/set up your work area
*Demonstrate the following:
*Threading the machine (turn off machine, follow the drawings on the machine)
*Installing a needle (flat to the back)
*Winding/changing the bobbin (disengage/engage bobbin winding switch)
*Examples of when to change the needle/why (broken, new project, bent, threading issues, always turn off/unplug the machine when changing the needle)
*Utilizing the hand wheel (always turn toward you)
*Sewing a straight line & turning a corner (use the needle in the fabric method)
*Using the reverse stitch lever (use this for backstitching)
*Stitch selection dial (the type of stitch)
*Adjusting Stitch Length and Width dials (length only for straight, length+width for zig-zag/decorative stitches)
*Needle position dial (left, right, center)
*Adjusting the tension dial (standard tension is 4)
*Changing the foot
 
<b>Domestic Sergers </b>
*Select your desired machine from the shelf storage/set up your work area
*Demonstrate the following:
**threading the machine (turn off AND unplug first, then follow the colorful guides)
**locating/removing the stitch finger
**Sew a scrap fabric with cutting knife engaged
*Adjust the tension dials to correct stitches (standard tension is 4, but may need adjustment based on your project)
**Retract the cutting knife
**stitch length dials
**Changing the needles (with the hex, needles will be at different heights)
**"chain on" / "chain off"
 
Rubrics for other testable items listed below are currently undergoing review and are subject to the tester's knowledge and appropriate safety required for a given machine.
 
Unplug equipment, return your machine to shelves, scraps/threads/fiber belong in the white bins, return all tools
 
Please reference shop signage for sorting your recycling–please dispose of food waste in the kitchen right next door.

If a machine is damaged please add an orange repair tag and send an email to fiberartsshop@artisansasylum.com  This method of reporting is not to put anyone on blast, this is to help us keep up with shop maintenance–not all tool testers/leads are available everyday, so we like to be notified as soon as possible if something needs repair! Work Surfaces

  • Big White Table (closer to the door) is for fabric/pattern paper ONLY, no hot tools allowed! No drinks/food/bags are allowed on this table–no exceptions!
  • Big Dark Grey Table (closer to ironing station) all purpose work. Please protect the table with scrap paper or cardboard if you are using glue/paint or anything that could leave a stain behind. If your project requires cutting, use a green self-healing cutting mat
