Personal Protective Equipment
- Standard shop personal protective equipment (safety glasses, no long hair, no flowing clothes, etc.) are required
- Ear protection is strongly encouraged while using the planer
- An attached vacuum is required while using the planer
Safe Operation
- Check the infeed direction and outfeed direction for sufficient clearance for all stock before starting cuts
- No stock may be fed into the planer that is shorter than 16”
- Long stock should be supported on both the infeed AND the outfeed
- DO NOT push stock through the planer; allow the planer to feed stock through on its own rate
- Adjust the depth of each cut to the width of the workpiece, not to exceed the maximum allowable depth for the machine.
- Alternate stock infeed locations along the full width of the planer, in order to minimize wear on the knives
- If you want to change feed speeds, change speeds while the planer is running, but not while material is being planed
Allowable Materials
- Only wood may be cut on the planer
- DO NOT plane laminates, particle boards, or other wood composites
- Always plane with the grain of the material. DO NOT plane end grain material
- No boards with loose knots, splits, crossgrain or other defects, as these can cause damage to the machine
- No extraneous globs of glue or epoxy on either the cutting surface or the table surface of the workpiece
- Cut wood must comply with the following rules:
- No moldy or wet wood
- No treated/painted/finished wood
- All nails and staples removed
- All hardwoods must be checked against a cutting/sanding chart for hazardous dust reactions
